This piece was a fun one. It was straightforward–a rare thing sometimes–and I’m oh so pleased with how it turned out. You might have seen this buffet/dresser in an earlier post that featured the “Farm Boy” in the “How to fix a drawer” post. It needed a bit of basic fixing, but nothing we (I mean, the Farm Boy) couldn’t handle. Drawer fixed? Check. Now on to paint. I often paint things based on what I have on hand: in this case, Old Fashioned Milk Paint in Driftwood and Snow White. Also, I have this really, really bad habit of not mixing up enough paint OR mixing up too much paint, and so as a result have gotten very good at color matching and/or preserving the unused paint in my fridge. In fact, there’s a whole top shelf in said fridge reserved for the leftovers. Yes, paint leftovers.
But really, this one is all ’bout them knobs. The original knobs were wood. Classic, yes, but a bit boring. Hence, I turned my sisters, Sara and Mary, loose on finding some interesting knobs. Sara found me these lovelies on ebay. Enough said, I think.
If you’ve worked with milk paint at all, you know that it has a mind of its own. In this case, it worked in my favor. It did this lovely crazing thing–Miss Mustard Seed and others have suggested that applying the paint in heat, as I did–can account for the crazing. It’s perfect. You’ll notice I didn’t paint the entire body–I love gorgeous wood as much or even more than paint–but rather stripped the top of the buffet and a portion of the upper piece. Can I tell you a secret? In retrospect, I wish I would have stripped, stained, and varnished the front legs as well. It would have repeated the curved wood motif present above, below. Ah, well. She’s still a beaut.
The best thing about this piece? I didn’t have to photograph it! The very talented and very wonderful Anne Woster of Anne Victoria Photography did the honors.
I’ve shared this at the following places: Friday’s Furniture Fix,The Painted Drawer, Think and Make Thursdays, and Finding Silver Pennies.
Till next time, friends!
